Ok, big news: Tron 2 is finally titled Tron Legacy! Walt Disney Pictures revealed the official title of the upcoming Tron sequel during the current San Diego Comic-Con.
Let's hope that they will keep it that way and won't change again! Anyway, here the new logo of the movie Tron 2, aka Tron Legacy:

The Legacy word is appropriate for the movie Tron 2. After most of the main cast from the original movie is back and from what we saw so far it's quite faithful to the spirit of the first Tron movie.
Bring on Tron Legacy then!

Disney hasn't decided yet about the final title of Tron 2, but the official synopsis of the new Tron movie has been released:

The new Tron movie, which seems to be titled Tron 2.0 by now, will also star Bruce Boxleitner who was playing as Alan Bradley aka Tron.
Bruce Boxleitner is indeed reprising his role, joining Jeff Bridges who was also in the original crew of the movie Tron in the role of Kevin Flynn.
I don't really like the geeky change to the title. The streamlined title Tron 2 would be be much better...

According to an interview given by Director Joseph Kosinski to AintItCool Tron 2 will be in 3D. Not exactly a scoop, would have been hard to imagine it otherwise indeed, but still this confirmation is welcome. The comic con trailer of Tron 2, shot with Stereoscopic 3D , was a kind of proof of feasibility. Seeing the great result, Joseph Kosinski wants to use it all along the movie: he is said to be "excited" by the look of the game grid in this format. Let's hope it will be in IMAX theaters!
More interesting is to know that Steven Lisberger who co-wrote and directed the first Tron Movie will be involved in TR2N as consultant, hence adding to the legitimacy of this sequel. Will be easier to render Steven Lisberger's vision with the latest technological advances: nice to bring him back then!
But what really gives its legitimacy to this sequel, at least for the hard-core fans, is the presence of actor Jeff Bridges in the cast: he was indeed the hero of the first tron movie.
Jeff Bridges talks about Tr2n in a recent interview given to the British newspaper Guardian (here):
Yeah, that's another unique, wild experience that was too good to turn down. Engaging in that world again feels just like it did all that time ago. Basically, I'm still a child, I love being childlike, and here was another chance to play with these crazy toys. And the cutting-edge technology makes it exciting. Doing the teaser trailer for Comic-Con, I had my first experience of motion capture. And that's turning the industry on its head. It's amazing being part of that.
There's such a retro love for Tron. How do you bring it up to date?
Well, when we made Tron there was no internet, no cellphones. But now we have motion capture, so I think we'll get a far more successful version of the story, which is someone literally getting sucked into a video game. When we did King Kong in the 70s, one minute you'd have a shot of Rick Baker in this big suit and then you'd cut to this 80ft stiff model, and they looked nothing alike. Compare to that Peter Jackson's King Kong the technology is there and they did a wonderful job. I thought they created a beautiful Kong. So I hope that'll be the same for Tron.

A sequel to the cult science-fiction movie Tron is under production under the direction of Joseph Kosinski. No official date yet for the release of Tron 2 but we may fairly expect if for 2010.
The first Tron movie written and directed by Steven Lisberger was released by Disney in 1982: it was really in advance on its time with cutting-edge computer graphics. It was starring Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn (and his counterpart inside the electronic world, Clu), Bruce Boxleitner as Alan Bradley (and Tron), Cindy Morgan as Dr. Lora Baines (and Yori) and Dan Shor as Ram. David Warner plays the villain, Ed Dillinger (and Sark), as well as providing the voice of the Master Control Program.
Here below a trailer (sourced by PalaceRoadshow from a VHS home video released in 1984) of the first movie Tron:
